Folds away small, turns in under a metre

The Merits Yoga is a small folding scooter built for tight spaces. It turns in a circle of just 96cm, which is less than a metre. That gets you around supermarket aisles, cafe tables and hallways where larger scooters cannot go.

It folds down in one piece to 52cm long, 43.5cm wide and 64cm high. That is roughly the space a large suitcase takes up standing on end. There is nothing to pull apart. You fold it, stow it, and unfold it at the other end.

The front end is the unusual part. Instead of one front wheel it has two, side by side, on a patented spring suspension system. Two wheels at the front give a small scooter a wider, steadier footing, and the springs take the jolt out of footpath joins and kerb ramps.

The tyres are foam filled rather than air filled, so they can never go flat and there is nothing to pump up. The frame is aluminium, the tiller adjusts for both height and angle so you can set a comfortable driving position, and armrests are fitted as standard.

The battery is a 24 volt lithium unit weighing only 1.7kg. It lifts out so you can carry it indoors and charge it on its own. A battery charging station is also available separately.

A full charge gives you up to 18km at speeds to 6km/h. It carries riders up to 113kg.

Where it works best

The Yoga is designed for footpaths, indoors and around the shops. It has 9.5cm of clearance underneath, which is good for a scooter this size, but it is not a hill climber.

• Very good on: shopping centres, indoors, level footpaths, flat sealed paths.
• Take care on: gravel, grass, cracked or uneven pavement, wet surfaces.
• Not suitable for: slopes steeper than 6 degrees, loose sand, rough or unsealed tracks.

Six degrees is a gentle slope. If you have a steep driveway or live somewhere hilly, this is not the right scooter and we can show you a model built for it.

The Yoga uses a lithium battery, and every airline sets its own rules for carrying them. Please check with your airline well before you book, and let us know if you would like help with the paperwork.

Before you buy

Folding is not the same as light. The Yoga weighs 25.7kg with the battery in. That figure is measured with the armrests off, so it will be a little more as you receive it. Taking the 1.7kg battery out still leaves about 24kg to lift. For most people that is a two-handed lift, and often a two-person job. Please check who will be loading it into the car before you decide.

It also carries up to 113kg, which is lower than most scooters. If you are close to that figure, talk to us and we will point you to a model with more capacity.
