Description

The Permobil F5 Corpus is a complex front-wheel drive power wheelchair designed to support stable and controlled mobility across a range of indoor and outdoor environments. This non-standing configuration is intended for individuals with complex mobility needs who require a power wheelchair that can manage everyday environmental features while also supporting advanced seating, positioning, and functional reach through the clinically established Corpus seating system.

Front-Wheel Drive Performance and ComfortRide Suspension

The F5 Corpus utilises a front-wheel drive configuration, which supports effective negotiation of common environmental features such as ramps, kerbs, and uneven surfaces. Front-wheel drive characteristics may be beneficial in certain outdoor contexts, particularly where continuous traction and a stable approach to obstacles are required. The absence of front castors also allows closer positioning to benches, desks, and work surfaces, supporting functional use in domestic and vocational environments.

The wheelchair is equipped with the ComfortRide Pro suspension system, incorporating all-wheel independent, oil-dampened shock absorbers that assist with minimising the transfer of vibration and impact to the user. This contributes to ride comfort and stability across sealed and semi-sealed surfaces commonly encountered in community settings. Maximum drive speed is configurable up to 10 km/h and is determined through clinical setup in line with user ability, safety considerations, and environmental use.

The chassis features a base width of approximately 648 mm, supporting access through standard doorways while maintaining a stable platform for powered mobility. Tyre and castor protection features assist with durability and reliability during regular outdoor use when the wheelchair is maintained in accordance with manufacturer guidance.

The Corpus Seating System and Power Positioning

The F5 Corpus is fitted with Permobil’s Corpus seating system, which incorporates biomechanically informed power positioning designed to assist with reducing shear forces and supporting pressure redistribution. The Ergo seat and backrest cushions utilise dual-density foam and breathable materials to support comfort and skin integrity over prolonged periods of use. Seating dimensions are adjustable within a defined range to accommodate individual requirements identified through a formal clinical assessment.

Standard powered seating functions include posterior tilt and power recline. The F5 may also be configured with ActiveReach functionality, which combines seat elevation with controlled anterior tilt. When prescribed appropriately, this feature may assist with functional reach, access to work surfaces, and positioning for certain transfers, subject to individual capability and clinical assessment. Driving while elevated occurs at a clinically defined reduced speed to support safety during functional activities.

Controls, Electronics, and Access Options

The F5 Corpus is configured with R-Net electronics, supporting programmable drive profiles and high-resolution display options. Integration with Permobil’s Power Platform and QuickConfig tools allows clinicians to customise drive parameters efficiently to match user needs.

For individuals with limited upper-limb function or complex access requirements, the wheelchair supports a wide range of alternative control methods, including chin joysticks, head arrays, and sip-and-puff systems. All access methods and sensitivity settings are selected and configured following clinical assessment to support safe and effective wheelchair operation.

Practical Use and NDIS Context

To support functional goals outlined in a participant’s NDIS plan, the F5 Corpus can be configured with accessories such as lighting systems, USB charging ports, device mounts, and storage solutions. The wheelchair’s design and weight capacity support regular use across domestic and community environments where powered mobility is clinically indicated, including employment, education, and social participation activities when prescribed appropriately.

Note: This information is provided as a general guide only. The Permobil F5 Corpus is a highly configurable item of Assistive Technology. Trial, prescription, and configuration should be undertaken in consultation with a qualified clinician to ensure the equipment is suitable for the individual’s functional needs, safety requirements, goals, and NDIS funding context.
