The Rothcare Boston is a small, portable scooter built to travel with you. It pulls apart into pieces without any tools. The tiller folds down, the seat lifts off, and the heaviest single piece weighs 10.5kg, so it can be loaded into a car boot and taken along on a day out.

Most scooters this size ride firmly. The Boston has suspension on both the front and the rear, which takes the jolt out of footpath joins and small bumps and makes a noticeable difference on longer trips around the shops.

The seat is height adjustable so you can find a comfortable driving position, and it swivels a full turn to make getting on and off easier. There is a removable basket for your shopping, and a horn to let people know you are there in a busy area.

The tyres are solid rather than air-filled, so you will never get a flat tyre and there is nothing to pump up. Anti-tippers are fitted at the back to help keep you steady on corners and uneven ground.

Two 12V batteries give you 10 to 15km on a full charge at up to 8km/h. That suits trips to the local shops, the club or a market rather than long journeys. It carries riders up to 136kg.

Before you buy

The Boston is built for short trips, not long ones. If you regularly travel more than about 10km at a time, or you need to get up steep hills, a larger scooter will suit you better and we can show you the options.

Although it comes apart, the whole scooter still weighs 48kg. Please check you can comfortably lift the individual pieces, or that someone can help you, before you decide.
